One Couple’s Legacy of Kindness

Ruth and Herman Albert

Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh B’Zeh—All of the Jewish people are responsible for one another. These words from the Talmud exemplify Ruth Albert z”l, who, upon her passing in 2021, left a generous bequest to JDC.

Ruth and her late husband, Herman, or “Hy” as he was known both in his family and the business community, were quiet, humble and dedicated philanthropists. They believed in hard work, coupled with kindness and the importance of giving back to institutions that support those in need in the greater Jewish community.

Ruth remained at Hy’s side as a dedicated wife and mother.

“They truly loved each other,” said Saul Berkowitz, their longtime CPA and business advisor, especially after Hy’s passing in 2002. “Theirs was a lifelong partnership built on love, trust and respect for one another—this shines through in their philanthropy.”

Including JDC in their wills—a simple act that anyone can do—will ensure that JDC will be able to provide rescue, relief and renewal to hundreds of thousands of Jews around the globe. Their legacy is a powerful example of the transformative impact a donor can have in the world long after they are gone.
